PDF – At your service
A quality localization process always involves several individuals performing
specific tasks within the process. This means information in electronic format
is shared among these individuals – which gives rise to concerns about
maintaining the integrity of established formatting, font selection, graphics
and other elements within the document.
PDF (Portable Document Format) files have become an established method of
maintaining this document integrity – while continuing to allow translation
editors and proofreaders to perform their work. The PDF format also removes the
obstacle of viewing the files on differing computer platforms.
Here’s how Adobe Acrobat has created and enabled the PDF tool:
|
Adobe Acrobat Software |
Capability |
| Distiller |
Adobe Acrobat Distiller creates PDF files from original documents
created using familiar applications such as PageMaker, Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Quark, and numerous others that produce PostScript files. |
| Reader |
Adobe Acrobat Reader allows viewing, searching and printing of
PDF files. Active bookmarks, hyperlinks and other functions are included with
the Reader capability. |
| Exchange |
Adobe Acrobat Exchange is a particularly important capability for
localization professionals. Exchange allows editors and proofreaders to not
only view, search and print PDF files, but also to perform the editing and
annotation functions that are crucial to the quality of the final product. |
